It was an unusually cloudy and wet day on Terra. The sky was filled with black-and-grey stormclouds. The air was humid and warm, smelling earthy and plant-filled, signs of an incoming storm. A regular person would never be out in this sort of weather, but Evie was. Because she wasn’t an ordinary person.
Evie crouched on the edge of the roof, her multicolored wings spread for balance, her tail curling behind her. She swayed slightly as a gust of wind blew by, but she did not let go of the ledge.
A voice crackled through the speaker on the band Evie wore around her neck. “Squads, are you in position?” Said the General’s voice, scratchy because of the bad internet in this part of the city.
Affirmatives from the other squads sounded through the speaker. Evie didn’t respond, because she knew that the General already knew she was in position, as she had been for the last half an hour while the other squads rushed to their positions. Slowpokes.
The General’s voice sounded again through the speaker. “Evie, is the target located?”
Even Evie’s superb dragon vision strained to see through the dim area, caused by the clouds. At the edge of her vision, she could see a figure moving stealthily through the gloom. “Target spotted,” She affirmed. “At the alleyway between buildings S-5 and S-6.”
Evie could almost hear the General’s thought process of what to do next, but he sounded confident as he said, “Squads Alpha and Beta, surround the target. Omega, get ready to catch the target if they attempt to escape. Squad Dragon Delta, hang back for now, but keep us updated on what’s going on.”
Evie almost growled at the fact that she had been told to not do anything, but complied, settling into a sitting position at the edge of the roof, curling her tail around her.
Squad Delta was nicknamed the “Dragon Squad” because the 5 remaining dragons on Terra were on the squad, and no one else. Unfortunately, only Evie was on the Delta Squad today because the rest of her dragon-friends were still recovering from their last mission, which hadn’t ended too well for Delta Squad.
Evie heard a shout, and she leaned forward to see that Alpha and Beta had surrounded the target. The target yelled in fright when he saw their military uniforms, and knew that his crime spree had ended. He gave in without a fight, and was handcuffed and knocked out.
“Target acquired,” The leader of Alpha Squad said through the speaker. “Mission completed.”
The General grunted in satisfaction. “Good job. Head back to base now.”
